Leading Can Be Uncomfortable.

Recently, Matt and I have been doing a lot of furniture browsing. We are in the process of buying our first house. It’s very exciting, expensive and scary, BUT mostly exciting.

We have sat on a lot of chairs, stools, benches, and sofas. There is nothing like sitting in a nice leather recliner with your feet up. Actually, scratch that. Take me to the mattresses! I’ll fall asleep right in that showroom.

As humans, we naturally veer towards comfortability. Comfort feels good! It’s security, structure and familiarity.  As a leader though, this natural veering throws us into a bit of a pickle because leading is uncomfortable. When you are leading, responsibility falls on you. How you lead effects people, decisions, vision and alters future plans. I have a feeling that I am not alone when I say, “leadership is uncomfortable!”

So what do we do about this?! We have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Here are a few ways snuggle up with the uncomfortable in leadership:


Confidence and reassurance only comes from knowing whose you are. The
uncomfortable, uneasy, and unknown can be put to rest when you remember that God IMG_9956loves you and He has anointed you for the position of leadership that you are in. How do uncover more confidence and reassurance? By spending time with God. Read His word, go to Him first for counsel, and surround yourself with trustworthy people who will encourage and support you.

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

No matter what happens, His opinion of you never changes.  In the celebrations and the struggles, if you love God, He will work ALL things for good.


Don’t let your weakness corner you. Corner your weakness. We all have shortcomings. There are parts of leadership that we excel at and parts that need time to mature. That’s ok! Instead of trying to mask over the parts that are not your strengths, face them head on. Work on making them better. Find books, podcasts, blogs and/or counsel that can help you grow. You feel more comfortable in uncomfortable leadership when you have some tools to tighten up those areas. Add some elasticity to your growth areas. Stretch them out.


You can have all the talent in the world, it doesn’t mean that it makes you comfortable leading. Gain some grit. Thrive when you face challenges. Bounce back and give it another shot when things don’t go exactly as planned, or you make a mistake. Be relentless and determined when it comes to your calling! Stick it out for the LONG haul and set your mind on the prize. I always admire leaders who are tenacious against all odds. Uncomfortable… but worth it.


We lead because we know that there is an end goal in mind. When you think long term, you are willing to do things you wouldn’t normally do if you are thinking short term. So when the going gets tough, remind yourself! Write it on your mirror in dry erase marker, stick a post-it on your laptop, heck, purchase a print off Etsy and frame that sucker!

Hebrews 12:1 “ Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! “

Don’t lose sight of the reward at the end, the people you will help along the way, the hope that you will bring to those you don’t know yet. The prize at the end knowing that you were faithful.

Yes, leading can be uncomfortable. Most times it is but it is so worth it. So swim against the current. Build your endurance and venture into unchartered waters. Keep your head up girl and keep trucking! You were created to lead.
